Swimming: New Year's 5000

My good friend Dave got this workout from his Master's coach.  It's 100 x 50.  I'd planned to do 50 x 100, but this was much more creative than what I had planned.  My stuff always tends to be grinding aerobic-tempo distance work.  This was more a mix of stroke and speed work.

All things considered, it went better than I had an right to expect.  The second set was the hardest.  After that, I think I did okay.

If you're wondering, I didn't do nearly as much butterfly as I would have with a workout like this back in the day.  Instead, I worked in a good amount of backstroke--more than I've done in years and years.

Also, pro-tip: Never, ever pull butterfly with paddles.  First, because the stroke is all in the hips, and more importantly, you'll tear up your shoulders.

I should probably do more speed work nowadays.  Man, it is not as easy as it used to be, though.

If you're wondering, the workout I'd originally planned is below:

Warm-Up
5 x 100 @ 1:35
5 x 100 @ 1:30
3 x 100 kick @ 2:05
5 x 100 @ 1:30 breathing ev'y 3rd

Main Set
15 x 100 @ 1:25 aerobic pace
100 easy

3 x 100 kick @ 2:05
5 x 100 pull @ 1:30
100 easy

5 x 100 IM @ 1:50
2 x 100 warm down

Total: 5000
