My daughter Hannah suggested this challenge for our family. She wants to try writing more poetry, and she's hoping that this challenege will get her into the habit.
She, my daughter Emma, and I are all doing the challenge. Today is Day 4.
4. Describe a time when you were in nature and felt a connection with the earth. Write about your environment and how it moved you.
When you think of digging in
You think of foxholes:
A morning spent with shovels,
Then two guys standing in a pit.
Instead: I'm now watching
A bulldozer tear into the Earth
Belching blackness into the sky
Mounding spoils pushed onto ruined grass
It's cool under the trees
Despite the late Georgia summer.
The guys joking while the dozers dig.
Tanks waiting quietly in the shade.
Later: I'm in the cupola
Directing my driver down into the pit,
Watching as it closes around us.
The Earth swallows us whole.
