Well friends, it seems like superheroes are suddenly cool again. What other conclusion can we draw from the reality that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is by far the biggest movie of the year, while Disney itself just seemingly relaunched the entire Marvel franchise to thunderous applause at their D23 show?
It's clever, in an incredibly cynical and calculated way, to essentially put the sword to the old San Diego Comic Con in favor of having one company launch all its own shit at a show it owns and controls.
Despite its recent financial recovery, it's telling that Marvel chose to show off its new X-Men cast alongside most of the rest of its other new shit at D23 rather than in Hall H at SDCC. Shows why, if you're a comic creator, you should probably always think of your work as a literary medium first and worry about the adaptations on down the road. If SDCC had stuck to comics, it might still be the biggest show in the world. As it is, though, shows like D23 and the NYCC seem to have surpassed it.
But maybe that's just my East Coast bias talking. I do live here and not there.
Either way, the changing mood can only help me personally. Perhaps now some of you will have a little more interest in my personal post-superhero project, The Return of Dr. Necropolis.
Here's hoping, anyway.
I can't believe how many new projects got teased and/or announced at D23. In addition to Doomsday, we got the aforementioned look at the new X-Men cast, a trailer for VisionQuest, and an announcement of The Incredibles 3. And that's before we mention Ashoka: Season 2, the new Star Wars: Starfighter movie, Frozen 3 (!), and tons and tons more geeky shit besides that.
Oh by the way, HBO Max's Lanterns debuts tomorrow night. It's been getting truly excellent reviews.
So. Anybody feel like reading a book?
