As For Dynamite: What Do You Do with Goldberg?

Twitter got into a thing about Bill Goldberg the other day, and it got me thinking.

So okay. After Double or Nothing, AEW head honcho Tony Khan was asked about potentially bringing Goldberd into the company for a brief run. Goldberg is a free agent, but rumor has it that his price is too high. Still, Khan noted that he’s spoken to Goldberg a few times, and that he “likes” the big man.

If you’re AEW, what do YOU do with Bill Goldberg?

As For Dynamite: Let’s Talk About Collision

If you’re reading this, you probably already know that All Elite Wrestling (AEW) announced a new two-hour Saturday show at the Warner Brothers-Discover (WBD) upfronts yesterday called AEW Collision.

On its face, this seems like good news.

Top 15 Posts of 2021

The end of the year is a time for reflection and re-commitment, for thinking about what worked and what didn't, and how we can improve in the months ahead.

My sense is that 2021 was a lot better for most folks than was 2020, but as we head into yet another year amidst yet another surge of the coronavirus, we are again reminded that we are still a long way from normal. Whatever "normal" means in the year 2022.

Among other things, it seems like the nation's overall psychology has deteriorated. We've spent so much time physically isolated from one another that we've now become emotionally isolated as well. This has not been good for anyone. Somewhere there's an inflection point between physical health and mental health, and as a nation, I feel like we're already teetering.

I know what this means for my family and my career. It's less clear what it means for my writing and/or As For Football.

I've done year-end wrap-ups like this before, but this is the first time that I've ever tried to integrate my writing for AFF with either my social media footprint and/or with my personal blog. It's been a somewhat fraught experience, introducing even more subjectivity into the process than normal. It's never been the case that the "best" posts of the year were necessarily the most widely read, but when we add in the effects of social media influence, we exacerbate the weird, giving potentially widespread voice to some truly random thoughts.

Making this list was therefore something of a balance. Some of it spoke to me. Some of it spoke to you. Some of it was randomly retweeted by the rich and much-more-famous. What can you do? My all-time favorite post on any platform has had just 387 readers since July 2016.  I don't know what that means other than that what speaks to me doesn't always speak to all of you.

Anyway. The Top 15 Posts of 2021 are after the jump.

Some Quick Thoughts Concerning AEW’s Fyter Fest (Night Two)

I’ve just read eight or more reviews of AEW’s Fyter Fest (Night Two), so I know that no one needs my thoughts on the show.

You’re getting them obviously.  Deal with it.

If you’re wondering, the best review by far came from 411 Mania. Those guys are legit fans of All Elite Wrestling, which gives the write-up a useful perspective in my opinion. I liked what they said enough that I actually bookmarked their site.

Saturday News & Notes: Tinkering with the Layout & Archives

I've finally fixed the links on the sides of the blog.  While I was at it, I added a link to the Rival Angels' "Halloween Special" that I wrote for my friend Alan Evans a couple of years ago and added an archives and a "word cloud" to help you navigate the blog's various archived topics.

My very brief stint writing for Rival Angels.
In case you ever wanted to know how I'd do as a
pro-wrestling promoter.

2 Things on a Tuesday: Magic, & Baseball

I don’t know what the Hell is up with the Yankees, but after an awesomely impressive and fun start, they’ve dropped something like ten of their last thirteen, often on botched saves from the bullpen.  Most of those have been close, but it’s nevertheless been frustrating as all get out.  I keep reading that this is the team’s long-expected reversion to the mean, but I confess that I don’t enjoy the inconsistency.  The Bombers actually won a game last night, with an excellent pitching performance by my man, rookie Jordan Montgomery, and a single-shot home run by new first baseman Tyler Austin.  Still, despite heading into the 9th with a five-run lead, they barely managed to escape with the victory.
None of which has a thing to do with my decision to run three days’ worth of “5 Things on a Friday” this week.  It’s just been weighing on me.
As I write this, it’s early Tuesday, and I’ve already found almost a full week’s worth of “5 Things on a Friday”-type articles.  Rather than cut down or make anything resembling editorial decisions, I’ve decided instead just to run my favorite feature all week long.
Enjoy!
