2beans

My new favorite Manhattan coffee shop is 2beans, an upscale coffee and chocolate bar located at 100 Park Ave, about a block south of Grand Central Station.  Sally and I wandered in last week on our way to meet some friends at Reichenbach Hall and came away with much more than we bargained for.
It was a memorable experience to say the least.
2beans is in Manhattan, about a block south of Grand Central Station.
2beans's coffee bar.
2beans is divided in half, with an entrance on each side for each bar, though the two halves connect around back, where there is some additional space with a refrigerator for food and whatnot.  Yes, there are separate coffee and chocolate bars.  This approach seemed overkill at first, but each bar is, in fact, its own separate entity with enough going on to merit having entirely its own space.  On the chocolate side, they have, well, pretty much every kind of chocolate you can possibly imagine.  I’m hardly an expert, but Sally is a particular fan of dark chocolate with orange, and she must have sampled fully eight different varieties of dark chocolate with orange while we stood talking with the chocolatier.  Honestly, the variety was so overwhelming as to be almost mind-numbing.  Poor Sally went through a bad case of analysis paralysis, but our chocolate barista was exceptionally patient with her--and more than willing to extend additional samples.

More chocolate than you can possibly imagine...
While Sally grazed, I walked over and grabbed a cup of coffee from the bar--nothing fancy, just coffee with cream, no sugar.  I trust that you will not be surprised if I tell you that it was excellent.  The barista served it with a small glass of water and a sample of sea salt chocolate, which was easily the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted!  I’m not even a fan of chocolate, but as soon as I tried the sea salt aperitif, I was hooked forever.  Needless to say, we walked out with much more chocolate than we’d meant to purchase, but it has been well worth it.

2beans is not the kind of place you want to go to grab a quick coffee on the run, but if you’re in the vicinity of Grand Central, and you’ve got a sweet tooth or are just looking to kill some time in an enjoyable setting, I highly recommend it.  In a city of upscale extravagances, this one is actually worth your time.
