Twenty-Two Years

 I wrote this for my Sally for Christmas.

Twenty-Two Years

The Christmas tree’s up and the house all bedecked;

The presents lie under the tree.

The stockings are hung, and the kids lie asleep;

The only one up is just me.

A few simple words that should come oh so easy:

A poem, a story, a tale…

Something to give to my silly, sweet Sally

To make Christmastime joy without fail.

But how can you capture some twenty-two years?

How do you cover a lifetime?

With a quick little tune or a few simple words,

To capture this moment sublime.

How can I say that this didn’t make sense,

In the days ‘fore we met, me and you?

But we did, and they do, and now twenty-two years…

With a lifetime ahead for us two.

Through glass and steel canyons and o’er beaches of sand,

Crushing snowy mountaintop highlands,

At football games when we’re cheering our team

Or when watching them rock’n’roll bands.

Through Thanksgiving feast days and kids’ runny noses,

Busted cars, flooded basements, and more!

Twenty-two years of us pulling together,

Makes this thing with the two of us soar.

Oh, do we capture some twenty-two years?

How can we cover a lifetime?

With a quick little tune or a few simple words,

To capture this moment sublime.

How can you say that this didn’t make sense,

In the days ‘fore we met, me and you?

But we did, and they do, and now twenty-two years…

With a lifetime ahead for us two. My sweet, silly Sally, my beautiful wife,

My best-est companion and more,

Merry Christmas, my love, for twenty-two years.

Here’s to twenty-two more!

  1. I mean, it's no "The Guy Next Door is Playing Christmas Music", but it's solid. :D
    It's beautiful, of course. Thanks for sharing.
