D&D Solo Adventure: Children of the Night Goddess

I've been wanting to do a follow up to the D&D solo adventure I wrote a few years ago, the Sellswords of Luskan: Winter Ambush.  As the name implies, that little adventure is based on my long-running game over at Myth-Weavers.  But though feedback on it from my gaming group was good, it takes a loooooong time to put one of those solo adventures together.  Not so much because the adventure itself is tough but because putting together all of the numbered paragraphs for the skills checks is.  This morning, however, I thought of a new way to do it on the blog here, so here goes.

If you haven't played Winter Ambush, go do that first.  The link will take you to the Google docs file where you can download the ZIP that's got everything you need.  Then come back here and strap in.

Sellswords of Luskan, Ch. 2: Children of the Night Goddess

Welcome back to the City of Sails!

Getting Started
This new adventure is based loosely on the game I'm running over at Myth-Weavers, but on a facet of our game that we've not had much chance to explore, the Sharrans.  In our game, Sharrans are often the bad guys, so part of the fun here is that you're playing the part of the villain.

To begin the adventure, make a Level 5 PC using the inherent bonus system.  That means that you get a +1 to your attack rolls and a +1 to your defenses, but that any magic weapons and armor that you find will only benefit you in their properties.  Their enhancement bonuses will not add to you attack rolls, damage rolls, or defenses.  With that in mind, your character will start with one magic item of 3rd or 4th level, but that item will have no enchantment bonus, merely item properties and powers.

As before, in this new adventure, you'll have a companion character.  This time it's Vilavarex, a kobold astrologer and follower of the moon goddess Shar.

If you choose to play a Leader or just want to live dangerously, you can replace Viavarex's Inspiring Word with Nightmare Eruption:

Encounter Format and Play
This adventure is going to be similar to the last one, save that instead of producing the maps (and some of the monsters) in Excel and then pasting the pieces into Word, I'm gonna produce most of it here and build around it.  The maps and other stuff will then go into Excel as before, again using Google Docs the way I did with Winter Ambush.  Hopefully, that'll work.  In any event, I suppose we can make changes on the fly if need be.

As before, unless specifically stated otherwise, you can take a Short Rest after every encounter, but you cannot take a long rest unless it is specifically noted.  Also, if you fall unconscious and Vilaverex cannot revive you, then you lose!  If Vilavarex falls unconscious, he then makes Death Saving throws the same as a regular PC.  Finally, I'm planning to do away with the numbered paragraph system in an effort to streamline production of this game.  We will nevertheless be making copious use of skills in this game, so bear that in mind as you create your character.

So.  At this time, you have one week to develop a 5th Level PC using the Inherent Bonus system.  Feel free to post questions or just simple information about your character below.  We'll start next Wednesday!

What are your questions?

  1. Thanks Shadeus. I'm gonna post the first part of the actual adventure on Monday. That way, you guys won't have to suffer through a beer review early in the week!
