In the same way that Robin Hood often starts with a bit about Robin's experiences in the Middle East as a part of the Crusades, the original version of BA: PBAM had its whole first issue set in Iraq.  For better or worse, that stuff was probably the strongest piece of the story, so when I broke the script up and started cutting, I kept all of the overseas stuff, but I rearranged it, so that it became a series of flashbacks.

Little did I know that J.J. Abrams was gonna make that the storytelling mode du jour with Lost the next year.
