Why is this scary? Because here is Kylo Ren, emo half-villain with just a tithe of his future power, and look how much trouble he's caused!
My take on the new movie is that it's as much prologue as story in its own right, and most of the critiques that I've seen--including my own--come down because of this. However, the core mission here was clearly to set up story questions for future episodes, and... Mission Accomplished.
I still wish we could have gotten a little more backstory on the state of galactic politics, but what can you do? At least we got new Star Wars, and it was fun.

We'll Never See Another Movie Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Comic Book Resources)
The anticipation of thirty years is something we'll never experience again, for Star Wars or really for any franchise film. There are two or three Marvel movies planned for every year for the forseeable future. There are at least two DC movies a year in that time, two Pixar/WDAS movies, new films on the way in the Star Trek and Jurassic franchises, four more Transformers films, two or three X-Men movies, and yes, there's going to be a new Star Wars movie every year from now on. In fact, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story out next December and Star Wars: Episode VIII out in May 2017, then including The Force Awakens we have three new Star Wars movies in eighteen months.
Eh. This was obviously written by someone who's not old enough to have stood in line for two hours to get tickets to see THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Before you could buy tickets on the Internet, you just had to go early and hope that you could get in. This was also when there were many fewer theaters per cinema building, but the screens themselves were larger. As a result, tickets were physically harder to come by because you didn't have ten show-times per day. Thus, the original STAR WARS ran in theaters for something like six months. Demand was that high.
I'm realizing that there is a whole generation of film writers and reviewers out there who've simply never seen a full-on STAR WARS feeding frenzy before. Well, this is what that looks like. The prequels didn't muster the same level of enthusiasm for obvious reasons. What you're seeing now is the true power of the STAR WARS franchise. Witness it and be in awe. It truly is a cultural phenomenon.
However, with the success of THE FORCE AWAKENS, we're gonna get nothing but movies exactly like it from now until eternity.
"Oh, I'm afraid this franchise will be quite operational when your friends arrive...". :).
