We recorded the second-ever As For Football College Football Show Wednesday night. Rob shot the first one pretty much by himself, but I came on for the new one, and it was a blast. Not something I ever saw myself doing, but I’m doing it.
I gotta say, I was a little dubious when the guys started talking about podcasting, especially for video. The way these guys have it set up, it’s on all the major podcast channels as audio, but it’s also headed for YouTube, complete with game clips and assorted visuals, allowing us to talk about some specifics from the Air Force game, including my single favorite play of the game. That’s awesome. But it’s also weird because it feels like we’re talking about the same things that I already wrote about, albeit in somewhat less detail.
Alas, Rob tells me that the kids today just don’t read.
This is why we’re working together, because I need his fresher, younger perspective. I’ve been super-pleased with the collaboration, if not with some of the realities of trying to reach out to folks.
Anyway, please please please check the show out. We tried really hard to keep it short and light--for the Short Attention Span Theater Generation--but the format itself remains a work-in-progress. For example, we had a whole discussion of creative play calling for option offenses that we cut to just a quick review of one play. At this point, we’re very much trying to gauge the audience’s attention span and see how deep we can dive on some of this stuff. Let us know what you liked and what you didn’t, and we’ll adjust.

2. Amazon Plans to Split HQ2 in Two Locations (NY Times)
The company is nearing a deal to move to the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, according to two of the people briefed on the discussions. Amazon is also close to a deal to move to the Crystal City area of Arlington, Va., a Washington suburb, one of the people said. Amazon already has more employees in those two areas than anywhere else outside of Seattle, its home base, and the Bay Area.
This is a farce. I mean, these guys spent a year or more searching every corner of America for their perfect headquarters location, and then they not only split the final decision, they also choose the two most obvious locations in the entire nation.
It always felt like a shakedown, but now… well, it still does.
3. Navy football playing for pride at this point (Capital Gazette)
Head coach Ken Niumatalolo had talked about the importance of putting together a complete game and the Midshipmen finally did. On Saturday, Navy was bad for both halves instead of just one as in previous losses to Temple, Houston and Notre Dame.
Are we still trolling Navy?
Yes, we are.
In all sincerity, though, my favorite thing about this season--by a lot--is that it’s the season in which Navy and Air Force both get a renewed lesson in the importance of the service academy rivalries. The Zoomies got theirs in pain at Michie Stadium. The Mids are in even worse shape facing a legit One Game Season. For them, the only game that still matters is Army-Navy.
Here’s a hint: Army-Navy was *always* the only game that mattered.
Not everyone agrees that building a laser-powered universal beacon for all of human civilization is a good idea. Famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking famously warned that we should be wary of advanced alien civilizations on habitable exoplanets.
"One day we might receive a signal from a planet like this, but we should be wary of answering back," Hawking said in the 2016 CuriosityStream series Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places. "Meeting an advanced civilization could be like Native Americans encountering Columbus. That didn't turn out so well."
I’m with Hawking. What could possibly go wrong?
5. Jerry Palm's Playoff Projection (CBS Sports)
I pulled a bunch of these, but we’ll give CBS Sports primacy of place since they carry Army’s games.
Armed Forces Bowl (Dec. 22) in Fort Worth, TX: American vs. Big 12
Most of prognosticators have Army in the Armed Forces Bowl, and I feel like it’s my fault because I pointed out on Twitter that fully 10% of AOG lives near Houston. Army will always draw well in Texas.
But that’s not the only place they could potentially draw, which is why I plan to release a more detailed look at Army’s potential matchups after the Colgate game. With any luck, that’ll get picked up by the national media in time to sway the conversation. Wouldn’t be the first time those guys have picked up my talking points.
Anyway, some additional projections are as follows:

SI: Army* vs. Memphis, Birmingham Bowl
SB*Nation: SMU vs. Army, Armed Forces Bowl
Athlon: Houston vs. Army, Armed Forces Bowl
Lotta folks have Army taking the place of a Power 5 team against the American Conference. Personally, I would much rather have Army take the place of an AAC school with a Power 5 opponent. I think that's more likely, too, but like I said, we’ll talk about it in more detail in a week or so over at AFF. Be looking for that.
