I think I need a writing group. Anybody interested? I think it would help to have an audience and a little push to keep on track with a project I recently restarted. Nothing to do with As For Football or with sports in any way. I’m writing — well, trying to write — an old piece of crime fiction.
It’s frustrating. For the longest time I kind of thought someone might discover me. That the West Point network would find me an agent and/or an editor if I just put enough really good work out there. But now I own part of a growing small media company, and I know that there are media people out there following our work, and I’ve also written at least two books that pretty much everybody has liked a Hell of a lot, and it’s still crickets.
And honestly, that’s fine. There’s a playbook you’re supposed to follow when you’re looking for an agent, and I’ve 100% ignored it. 1000%. Because the industry itself is exploitative, half of it’s designed to string you along on hope and a prayer, and anyway, it’s not like I’m broke and need to go hat-in-hand looking for a job. This was always a “my way or no way” proposition.
That’s a choice I made a long time ago.
Honestly, I’m grateful enough that people want to read my stuff for AFF, and that they listen to our podcasts. We’ve been growing our show over the offseason! Yo, that is actually amazing.
So the new project is just art, made for its own sake. And that’s fine. I think of myself as an artist when I write. So? Doesn’t mean I don’t want to finish.
I’m just telling you, compared to all the other stuff, I feel like I need a little push to keep on track. So much of life is so immediate that staying on task on a project that’s just extra, well, I’m struggling with it.
