CFB Games of the Week: Week 2

Y’know, I was only partially right about Tennessee last week.  I was right that they would start ugly.  I was wrong, though, about exactly how ugly they’d start.
They’ve had a bunch of kids enter the transfer portal this week, so it looks like the wheels may be coming off down in Knoxville.  Yikes!
Don't you just love college football?
Top 5 Games of the Week
Army at Michigan is obviously the Game of the Week.  These are the others.  Presented in the order in which they’ll be on TV.

Friday, 8:00 PM - Wake Forest at Rice (+19) (CBSSN)
Ross Tucker and Ben Holden call their second Rice game of the season.  I’m personally curious to see just how good this Rice team is and whether or not they can hang with the Demon Deacons the way they hung with Army.
Pick: Rice
We’re all still stuck thinking that last year’s results matter.  They don’t.  Rice is better.  We don’t know if they’re how much better, but they’re certainly not terrible.

Saturday, September 7
12:00 PM - Cincinnati (+16) at #5 Ohio State (ABC)
An interesting match-up, and NFL journeyman QB Dan Orlovsky is on color commentary.
Pick: Cincinnati
The Bearcats have a good team and a particularly good defense, so one would assume they cover.
7:00 PM - BYU at Tennessee (-4) (ESPN)
Whatever Tennessee is this season, we’re gonna see their very best selves on Saturday.  Remember, the Vols have astronomically more talent on their roster than BYU does.
Pick: Tennessee
The Vols absolutely must win, right?

7:00 PM - North Texas (+3.5) at Southern Methodist (ESPN3)
I know SMU is supposed to be better this year, and they recruited me a little coming out of high school.  I’ll still take QB Mason Fine and the Mean Green in Fine's senior season.
Pick: North Texas
It’s a crime that this one is on ESPN3.
7:30 PM - #6 LSU @ #9 Texas (+6.5) (ABC)
LSU also recruited me coming out of high school.  In fact, they recruited me first.  On behalf of that memory, I would very much like to see them win.  Plus, they have a truly electric defense.
Pick: Under 56
I believe in LSU’s defense.  Haven’t seen their new-look offense yet, and they’re playing a Big XII team, so maybe taking the Under is foolish.  But who’re really going to be surprised by a low-scoring, smashmouth game?
By the way, this is the kind of game that I wish As For Football had the time and resources to cover, both because it’s a big game and also because half of the Army is from Texas.  Granted, I’m not personally a Texas fan, but still...
Save the Army game, this ought to be the best game of the weekend.

Honorable Mentions
These are all Saturday.
7:30 PM - Tulane (+20.5) at #10 Auburn (ESPN2)
How good is Tulane?  How good is their defense?  I guess we’ll find out.
12:00 PM - West Virginia (+11) at Missouri (ESPN2)
Does Mizzou suck?  Asking for a friend.
12:00 PM - Vanderbilt (+8) at Purdue (BTN)
Vandy’s getting points at Purdue?  What in tarnation?  I demand more SEC bias!
2:00 PM - South Florida (+6) at Georgia Tech (ACCN)
In this game, Tech fans finally begin to see how stupid going away from the triple-option was given their school’s academic requirements.
3:30 PM - #12 Texas A&M at #1 Clemson (-15) (ABC)
The Aggies are always woofing at the end of the year, but they’ve got a shot at the champs this week.  Anyone think they can take advantage?
3:30 PM - Illinois at Connecticut (+18) (CBSSN)
I thought UConn was supposed to be better?
4:00 PM - UTSA (+28.5) at Baylor (FSN regional)
I would absolutely watch this by way of scouting next week’s opponent, but it’s on a Fox Sports regional network.  Ugh!
11:59 PM - Oregon State at Hawaii (-4) (Stadium [Facebook])
Not only is this game at midnight, it’s also on local pay-per-view in Hawaii.  What kind of Communism is that?
