My daughter Hannah suggested this challenge for our family. She wants to try writing more poetry, and she's hoping that this challenege will get her into the habit.
She, my daughter Emma, and I are all doing the challenge. Today is Day 7.
7. Write about a place that you have traveled to that you absolutely fell in love with. Describe the place and why you enjoyed being there so much.
We'd looked at so many places.
You'd think finding a place to live would be easier. We were a young family, sure, but I had a degree from a good college and a promising job. And we'd done the stuff you're supposed to do. We'd set up our lives, established ourselves, and married a little later.
I thought we'd put ourselves into position to live out the American Dream.
But the American Dream implies not just a house but a Home. We'd looked everywhere, and yet, somehow, Fairfield County had shown itself surprisingly short on actual Homes.
One more place, I thought, and if that doesn't work, we might have to make some compromises.
That place, at least, had big windows and a lot of light. If a house could have a mood, this one was cheery. Lived in. Old but cared for. There were things to fix, sure, but a lot had been done as well. We could live our lives there and work as we went.
The house sat on a tiny lot but offered an inviting front porch and nice, finished basement -- an obvious man-cave. There was room for friends and for our family to grow.
Sally knew it immediately. "I dreamed about this place," she said, "about Psalm 118:8. 'It is better to take refuge in the Lord that to trust in men.'
"This is our refuge. We can live here."
We can, I thought. We really can.
