Saturday New & Notes: Beat Colgate!
Hey folks. The Saturday Celebration posts weren't doing a lot over at AFF, so we tried something new and moved that particular discussion to Thursday. I'm not sure it did any better on Thursday, but the end result freed up the Saturday spot here, and here we are.
Some of the stories I'm following this weekend are after the jump.

5 Things on Friday: Football Begins!
Truth is, I didn't love the Giants' first preseason game even though it started with a bang.
— New York Giants (@Giants) August 9, 2018After that, things slowed considerably. The Giants' revamped O-Line looked maybe a little better than they were last year, but their second stringers were terrible, and backup QB Davis Webb, would-be star of the preseason, was not good at all. Starting QB Eli Manning wound up 4/7 for 26 yards. He took a sack, made a terrible pass via miscommunication to TE Rhett Ellison that should have been intercepted, and was victimized by two really egregious drops. One went to a backup wide receiver on a quick out; the other came on a well-timed screen play to RB Jonathan Stewart. Both should have been first downs.

5 Things on a Friday: Football Season is Coming!
The New York Giants reported to training camp this week along with the rest of the NFL. With that, my buddy Joe and I scheduled the new season of our now annual four-week NFL divisional previews. The NFC will be here again during the week while Joe covers the AFC over at A Hoosier on the Potomac on weekends. I think Joe said he was going to run his columns on Sundays, but don’t hold me to that. Mine will run on Thursdays.
More to the point, I’ve personally got a lot of football scheduled for the next few weeks. It starts Tuesday with the return of weekly Army Football Preview posts, and then we’re off.
Let’s do it!

5 Things on a Friday: Praying for a New Plane
I’m back. I’ve been busier of late, so I don’t know that 5 Things' return is necessarily going to be a regular occurrence, but there’s so much going on that I thought maybe we ought to talk about at least some of it.
Let’s get it on!

5 Things on a Friday: Into Elimination Game #1
This has been a pretty good sports week. Army won, the Yankees came back from the brink to take the lead in the ALCS, and even the woeful NY Giants have rediscovered their running game.
This is what the field looks like ONE win away from the series!!!! pic.twitter.com/ch0kxanEer— Paul O'Neill (@PaulONeillYES) October 19, 2017

2 Things on a Tuesday: Magic, & Baseball
I don’t know what the Hell is up with the Yankees, but after an awesomely impressive and fun start, they’ve dropped something like ten of their last thirteen, often on botched saves from the bullpen. Most of those have been close, but it’s nevertheless been frustrating as all get out. I keep reading that this is the team’s long-expected reversion to the mean, but I confess that I don’t enjoy the inconsistency. The Bombers actually won a game last night, with an excellent pitching performance by my man, rookie Jordan Montgomery, and a single-shot home run by new first baseman Tyler Austin. Still, despite heading into the 9th with a five-run lead, they barely managed to escape with the victory.
None of which has a thing to do with my decision to run three days’ worth of “5 Things on a Friday” this week. It’s just been weighing on me.
As I write this, it’s early Tuesday, and I’ve already found almost a full week’s worth of “5 Things on a Friday”-type articles. Rather than cut down or make anything resembling editorial decisions, I’ve decided instead just to run my favorite feature all week long.
Enjoy!

TV Talk Back: 13 Reasons Why
Netflix’s new series 13 Reasons Why is America’s latest obsession, and with good reason. I read one review that described it as “a high school melodrama for adults who like watching high school melodramas.” That’s a fair assessment save that 13 Reasons Why has a lot more to say than something like Party of Five or Riverdale ever will or did. It’s got us talking in my house about teenaged angst and suicide but also about teenaged happiness in general, all of which are relevant topics as we prepare for our oldest to start her first year of high school this coming fall. Our daughter is also named Hannah, and like the protagonist of 13 Reasons Why, she’s not an obvious cool kid, though like the show’s Hannah, she certainly has her share of friends. How we navigate the coming storms together is a matter of acutely critical importance.
Spoilers ahead.

Thinking about Iron Fist
A lot has been said about the casting of Iron Fist. Ultimately, I think Marvel decided to cast a white dude to play Danny Rand, so that they could make Rand dumb. This is often the way he comes across in the comics. But the choice appears to have frustrated most reviewers, and while I get that, I still see what Marvel was thinking. Which is to say that if you’re Marvel, and what you really care about is the inevitable Power Man & Iron Fist Nteflix team-up show, you kind of need Danny to be dumb, and I can’t see how that works with an Asian dude playing the role.

The dragon of Kun-Lun has symbolized the Iron Fist for ages uncountable. |
Like, “Why is this Asian dude constantly getting scolded on the ways of the street by Luke Cage?”
