Final Thoughts: Swim Across the Sound 2025

We did the Swim Across the Sound this past Saturday, and it went really well.

We had kind of a different event this year. After years with the original Team RBG, none of my habitual teammates could make this one. I initially reached out to Race Director Liz Fry to just fold me into someone else’s team, but Liz didn’t want that. She wanted to keep Team RBG a going concern.

Swim Training Update

My Swim Across the Sound team fell apart a few weeks ago. It happens. Folks have lives and real-world concerns, and for better or worse, not everyone can make themselves available on the first Saturday in August every single year. After all the years I’ve been able to rely on this same small group of people, it’s somebody else’s turn to do their part now. I reached out to the race director for help fielding a team last week, but before I did that, I considered just swimming the damn thing solo. Not because I wanted to but to smooth out the logistics.

Swim Across the Sound Update: Swimmer(s) Needed!

Hi everyone.
I don't know if anyone lives at all close to Coastal Connecticut, but I am in dire need of an open water swimmer or two.
I've run a Swim Across the Sound team for the last few years, raising money for St. Vincent's Hospital's Cancer Center. This year, unfortunately, most of my team can't make it. I reached out to the charity a couple of weeks ago, and I *think* that they can give me at least two for the team. However, I still need at least one more, and here we are.

If you are at all interested, you can find more information via this link right here. I'm not much on social media these days, but I'm happy to answer questions as best I can.
Thanks in advance.

Swim Across the Sound 2025

Friends,

As many of you know, I will be competing in the Swim Across the Sound to support St. Vincent's Hospital's Cancer Center again this year. 2025 marks a decade with the Swim for me. I first competed as part of "Team Y-Me?" way back in 2015. We've learned a lot and raised a lot of money in that time. This year can and should be our best year ever!

Highlights from 2024

Happy New Year! I hope this note finds you happy and healthy heading into 2025.

It feels like a lot happened this past year for Casa Cabeza, to the point that this is now my third attempt to put it all into some kind of context. I finally decided to publish a simple list of highlights.

These are presented in no particular order.

Swim Across the Sound Update

Friends,

Team RBG had a banner week this week, totalling over $8,000 in donations from our incredibly generous friends and families. I feel truly blessed and humbled by your outpouring of support this past week, and indeed, throughout this whole season. The Swim changes lives, especially mine. Watching my own friends and collegues come together to support my cause has been a life-changing, life-affirming event in an increasingly hostile and polarizing world.

Touring My Trophy Case

I reorganized my trophy case, going from two rows to three. In the process, I added a few things that had previously been either in our library or in our china cabinet, and I removed a few things that either weren't true trophies or that were redundant with other stuff that was already in there.

Here's where we landed. I tried to leave a little room at the top for future Swim Across the Sound trophies.

I'm now dying to explain this. If you're interested, the explanation is past the jump.

Swim Across the Sound 2024

If you've got a few moments, I'd like to talk to you about the Swim Across the Sound

The Swim is an annual charity race sponsored by St. Vincent's Medical Center to benefit cancer patients in Southwest Connecticut. The Swim doesn't pay for cancer treatments. It pays for all of the things that insurance doesn't cover.

Quick Explainer: Who the Hell Do I Think I Am?

Friends, it feels like new social media sites are popping up faster than weeds in my wife's garden. What can you do? No one's quite sure which ones are gonna stick just yet, but we're all steady joining these things for better or worse. The hope, at least for me, is that each new site will offer a way to engage a new or different audience.

But every time we join one of these sites, we have to introduce ourselves all over again. That's a pain in the butt.

So. This is a little explainer: Who the Hell do I think I am?

Swim Across the Sound Update: Less Than One Month To Go!

Sometimes swimming is great, sometimes swimming is a grind, and sometimes it's both. Less than a month out from the 2022 Swim Across the Sound, and we've gotten into a space where it is very much both.

Let's start with the simple reality: I am swimming very well.

But I've also been swimming a lot, so this isn't exactly a surprise.

Swim Across the Sound (Update 2): Aerobic Threshold Mystery!

Well friends, we have reached the part of the training cycle in which I remember why I retired from competition. Which is to say that I woke up this morning tired and sore to the point that it took a real effort of will to get out of bed and go swim. Looking back on my competitive swimming career these days often feels like remembering that time I had a mental illness. I was mad about everything pretty much all the time, and I used those feelings to fuel my competitive fires. Today I’m in a much better headspace, and that’s great 99% of the time, but boy, it is sooooo much more difficult to find the right mindset when things get tough in training.

Swim Across The Sound Update

I bagged swimming outside this morning, & it looks like I might bag open water swimming on Sunday, too. It’s gorgeous in Coastal Connecticut this morning, but it’s also 58-degrees with the water at 62. That’s — just barely — doable in a sleeveless wetsuit, but it’s nobody’s idea of fun. I have a thick neoprene cap for mornings like this, and if the pool was closed like it was during the pandemic, I'd have no choice but to tough it out. However. We no longer live in that world, thank God, so I let myself off the hook. Plus, it's supposed to rain Sunday morning, so...

We're trying to be smarter with this, even though I'm not always great at that.

Yours truly during the 2019 Swim Across the Sound.

Swim: Back in the Pool (2900 yards)

Got back in the pool at the local YMCA in Stratford yesterday.  This was my first actual pool swim since quarantine started.  COVID-19 kept me out of the water for twelve weeks, from late March to mid-June, but I've been swimming in open water since the water itself got warm enough.  That's given me six weeks of work but not a lot of training at tempo.

With my buddy Dave after a 3.25-mile open water swim last Saturday.
Alas, the coronavirus has made Connecticut really strict about swimming rules.  I had to reserve a time at my local YMCA, and they held me to a strict 45-minute time limit.  It was therefore important to go in there with a plan and to be very deliberate about what I was doing.  Thus, this workout wasn't quite what I wanted it to be.  However, it was way, way better than nothing.

My first workout back was planned as follows:

New Year's Week Swim / Weights Workout Notes

Folks ask me for swimming workouts all the time.  It came up again over the weekend.  This post archives last week’s workouts.
I should note that I train on a four-week cycle -- three working weeks followed by a rest week.  I probably wouldn’t do it like that if I was training for a big swim meet and planning a taper.  However, these days I’m just a master’s class athlete trying to stay in decent overall physical shape.  The four week cycle helps me stay both healthy and sane in what would otherwise be a literally endless grind.
I train with some seasonality for the same reasons, peaking as a swimmer in August for the Swim Across the Sound but spending more time in the gym through the fall and winter months to prep for ski season.  I never lift heavy, but if I'm being honest, I enjoy the gym more than the pool.  It just so happens that I'm a better swimmer than weight-lifter.

Pics from the Swim Across the Sound

Team RBG 2.0 swam across Long Island Sound yesterday, raising more than ten thousand dollars for St. Vincent's Cancer Center and placing second overall in the Classic (No Wetsuit) division.  We beat the Sacred Heart University team among others, and everyone swam really, really well.  I was pretty happy about how it came out.

Some pics are below.

Team RBG 2.0 & the Swim Across the Sound

Friends,

As many of you know, I'm competing in this year's Swim Across the Sound to support St. Vincent's Hospital's Cancer Center.  The Swim is a 15-mile open water event that starts in Port Jefferson, NY, and finishes on the far side of Long Island Sound in Bridgeport, CT.  Team RBG 2.0 is entered in the Classic (No Wetsuit) category, which means that we'll swim as a relay, taking half-hour pulls while a boat motors slowly alongside us.  We have a team of legitimately talented swimmers -- Andy and I both swam for the Army Swim Team, Class of 1995, while Chris and Stephen are experienced triathletes (and Navy vets).  However, we'll have the tide against us this year, making this a serious challenge.

We're going to beat it, though, and we're going to beat cancer, too.

Swim, Bike, Run, Live, Love, Repeat

“I want it all.
“I want it all.
“I want it all.
“And I want it now!”
― Freddie Mercury from Queen’s, “I Want It All”
I trained through the fall and into the spring, improving my fitness while remaining conscious of the fact that I could no longer afford the kind of single-minded devotion that had made me a champion in the pool.  I wanted to race and do well, but I needed to be a good father and a good husband, and I needed to find meaning in my professional work as well.  I had to find balance.  I ran Brian’s Beachside Boogie, an off-road run-bike-run duathlon, in the spring of 2009 and followed it up in June with the HealthNet Olympic Triathlon at Connecticut’s Indian Well State Park.  This was my first Olympic distance race, and it proved to be much more of a struggle than I’d expected.  I finished in just over three hours, realizing in the process that I would need to recommit to training longer before my next Olympic distance race.
